In looking into numerous complaints that thieves were on a rampage in the parking lot during the Braselton basketball games, Deputies Curtis Spence and Jack Lawson staked out the parking lot and apprehended two young Athens residents that were stealing tires, hubcaps, and personal items out of fans cars while they were inside the gym.

McEver Poultry was featured in a two week article in the Jackson Herald. It told of how Mr. R. H. McEver had started up the business in 1925 with just him and his wife slaughtering an occasional hog. In 1930 they hired their first two employees and the business grew to a $ 600,000 annual business.

McEver was slaughtering around 125 hogs and 75 cows on a weekly basis in March of 1951. An expansion added 2,700 feet of space to the business in February of this year. They operated with six freezer lockers and three delivery trucks that delivered meat products within a 100-mile radius of the plant. Mr. McEver would be strong in civic involvement in Talmo, Jefferson and Jackson County. He was a member of the Rotary and sponsored various company teams that represented his company with dignity and pride.

Mrs. Morris Bryan Senior bought the Harrison Hotel.

On August 13 - 20 at the Albert Logan Fair Grounds - The Cody Fleming Show came to Jefferson.

It was the first carnival that ever featured a roller coaster ride in Jefferson.

Commerce Poultry opened on August 3, 1951

It was owned by Billy Bolton and processed 10,000 head per day

Jefferson High School News . . .

The Dragon boys lost their first three games to Bogart, Statham and Braselton. Their first win was over a good Snellville team 48 - 32 in Jefferson.

Starters were; Billy Sailors, Dickie Copas, Curtis Segars, Sidney Johson and Charlie Barrett. Other team members were Charles Middlebrooks, Tommy Manus, Marvin Hall, Davis Roberts and Y. D. Maddox .

The Jefferson girls beat Snellville 54 - 45 with Jan Anderson scoring 31 points. Dot Cook, who would later become a prolific scorer for the Dragons played Guard in this game.

Dickie Copas and Charlie Barrett were named captain of the 1951 football team after spring practice.

Other Sports News and Activities . . .

The Maysville High School girls beat Gillsville 105 - 27 on January 12. The Maysville guys won 62 - 27.

Starters for Maysville girls were;

Johnnie Ledford, Bobbie Holland, Valeria Stone at forwards and Edna Meeks, Billie Holland and Melba Doss at Guards.

The Commerce girls team featured; Shirley McDonald, Bobbie Malone, Marion Wilson, Tennie Little, Sarah Shankle and Pat O’Kelly.

The boys team was; Garnet Bray, Charley O’Rear, Dewoodie Martin, Bob Love and Gene Baird.
