Dragons fall in State

April 4, 2010

WESTMINSTER 3, JEFFERSON 1: At Jefferson, Blair Buffington won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Dragons' only victory against the defending state champions in the quarterfinals of the Class AA state tournament.

Jefferson ends the season with a 14-1 record.

Jefferson advances in State Tennis tournament

► JEFFERSON 3, GREATER ATLANTA CHRISTIAN 1: At Jefferson, the Dragons swept singles play to defeat Greater Atlanta Christian in the second round of the Class AA state tournament.

Zack Bost won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Blair Buffington won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Ben Daniel won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.

Jefferson (14-0), which defeated Macon County in the first round, will face Westminster, which defeated Armuchee and Heard County, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the state's third round.

JEFFERSON 5, MACON COUNTY 0: At Jefferson, the Dragons swept visiting Macon County without dropping a single game in five matches in the first round of the Class AA state tournament. Zach Bost, Blair Buffington and Ben Daniels won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0. The doubles teams of Matt Buchanan and Aaron Martin and Trevor Castellaw and Cason Thurmond also won 6-0, 6-0.

Jefferson will host Greater Atlanta Christian in the next round at a date and time to be determined.

Girls tennis

JEFFERSON 5, PIKE COUNTY 0: At Jefferson, The Lady Dragons won all five matches in straight sets in the first round of the Class AA state tournament. Bell Blankenship won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Maggie Broome won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 and Miranda McGarity won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

Tristan McGarity and Taylor Bost won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and Alison Salsman and Savannah Howard won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Jefferson will play either Greater Atlanta Christian or Calhoun in the second round at a time to be determined.

Dragons win Region !

The Jefferson Dragons defended their 2009 region tennis championship in fine form this week, as they became the 2010 8AA region champs at North Oconee High School.

The Dragons won their first match of the day against Riverside Military Academy 3-0. Among those winning deciding matches for Jefferson was Blair Buffington at number two singles 6-0, 6-0. Ben Daniel won at number three singles, 6-1, 6-0. Matt Buchanan and Sky Porter won at number one doubles 6-0, 6-0. Trevor Castellaw and Aaron Martin won at number two doubles 6-1, 6-1.
That set up a final match pairing against the home team, the North Oconee Titans.

The Dragons came away with the 3-2 win and the region title. Zach Bost won at number one singles 7-5, 6-2. Blair Buffington won at number two singles 6-0, 6-0. The clinching match was at number two doubles, with Trevor Castellaw and Aaron Martin coming from behind to win 5-7, 6-0 and 7-5.
Up next is state tournament action. Jefferson is expected to open state play at home on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
The Jefferson High School Boys’ Tennis Team won the Region 8AA championship last week by defeating North Oconee High School 3-2. The team members are;  Austin Pratt, Blair Buffington, Zach Bost, Ben Daniel.  Coach Jim Bryan, Matt Buchanan, Aaron Martin, Trevor Castellaw, Sky Porter and Coach Brad Puckett.

Boys Tennis ~ Tuesday, April 13, 2010 

JEFFERSON 3, ATHENS ACADEMY 2: At Jefferson, the No. 2 doubles team of Cason Thurmond and Aaron Martin defeated Athens Academy's William Yu and Robert Slocumbe 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the victory for the Dragons.

Jefferson (10-0) also got victories at No. 1 singles, where Zach Bost defeated Kevin Dong 3-6, 6-0, 10-7, and at No. 2 singles, where Blair Buffington beat Hayden Messer 6-3, 6-1.

Athens Academy's victories came at No. 3 singles, where Taylor Williams downed Ben Daniels 6-2, 6-0, and at No. 1 doubles, where Michael Lai and Houston Gaines defeated Matt Buchanan and Sky Porter.

Girls tennis - Tuesday, April 13, 2010

ATHENS ACADEMY 5, JEFFERSON 0: At Jefferson, the Lady Spartans swept all positions to take the victory over Jefferson.

In singles, Margaret Boyette defeated Bell Blankenship 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Greer Ransom beat Maggie Broome 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 and Emily Dong dispatched Miranda McGarity 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

In doubles, Sydney Platek and Anna Justice downed Tristan McGarity and Taylor Bost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 and Melissa Corry and Elizabeth Sinyard bested Alison Salsman and Savannah Howard 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2.

► JEFFERSON 5, BANKS COUNTY 0: At Jefferson, the Dragons swept every position but No. 2 doubles to remain undefeated.

In singles, Zach Bost won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Ben Daniels won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Sky Porter won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

In doubles, the No, 1 team of Matt Buchanan and Aaron Martin won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1.

► JEFFERSON 5, BANKS COUNTY 0: At Jefferson, the Lady Dragons swept the visiting Lady Leopards to improve to 6-1.

In singles, Bell Blankenship won 6-4, 6-3 at No 1, Maggie Broome won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 and Miranda McGarity won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

In doubles, Taylor Bost and Tristan McGarity won 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 at No. 1 and Alison Salsman and Erin Roberts won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.

Boys golf

► JEFFERSON TOPS COMMERCE, ACS: At Double Oaks in Commerce, Jefferson's Patrick Hilton carded a 43 and Michael Baker added a 45 as the Dragons finished at 180, defeating Commerce (186) and Athens Christian (226).

Commerce's Casey Drinkard was medalist with a 41 and Colton Dean added a 43. Charlie Horton had a 51 for Athens Christian.

Girls golf

► JEFFERSON 101, COMMERCE 130: At Double Oaks Golf Course in Commerce, Hanna Chapman shot a 9-hole total of 49 and Brooke Whechel added a 52 as the Lady Tigers improved to 3-1.

The Jefferson Lady Dragons lost one and won won with their last two matches, falling to Oconee County before defeating Lakeview.

North Oconee defeated Jefferson 4-1, with Jefferson’s only victory coming at number one singles, where Bell Blankenship won in sets of 6-3, 6-2.

On Tuesday, the Lady Dragons improved to 4-1 with a 4-1 victory over Lakeview Academy.

Bell Blankenship won at number one singles with set scores of 6-4 and 6-4. Miranda McGarity won 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles.

Taylor Bost and Tristan McGarity won in set scores of 5-7, 6-2 and 11-9 at number one doubles. At number two doubles, Erin Roberts and Alison Salsman won 6-2, 6-2.

The Lady Dragons will next travel to Walnut Grove on Thursday.
