Comments:Cecil, I enjoy all the wondeful information you haven on your site and only wish I had more time to spend on it. I have been doing some research on the history of Jefferson Fire Department, and am finding a fair amount of history no one has spoken of in my 25 years there, with all hopes of changing this as information is discovered. So this brings me to my question. In a recent city council document I noticed the sell of an old "fire door" to E.L. Kelly in 1955. In 1956 the same name was given permission to build a residence on Athens street. Does this name ring a bell and if so would you know where the house was built? Thanks Mark Duke Mark.duke68@gmail.com

Comments:M. Bagwell, Commerce: I really enjoyed your Jefferson Hall of Fame list. I knew most of themn, although some only casually, taught some, and worked with some. They were all wonderful people who need to be remembered for making Jefferson the town she is today.

Thank you, Mr. Bagwell. I read your comments on face book and enjoy them. I appreciate your comment on the Jefferson Hall of Fame. I was fortunate to know many of these great Jefferson citizens. They paved the way for our culture and way of life. Sad that so many are no longer with us. I think that's why I put this page on my site. We need not ever forget these dedicated Jefferson and Jackson Countians that made our city and county what it is today. Blessings to you and the family. Cecil Buffington

Comments:Jefferson Drug Co. my email is alexmazz@optimum.net Can you tell me approximately when the drug store took the name Jefferson Drug Co.? I have a red graduated medicine shot glass or "dose glass" from Jefferson Drug Co. I would like to be able to date. It appears to be from the mid-1960s through early 70s. Do you know if the store was already called Jefferson Drugs by 1965 or earlier? Thanks so much for your help! Best regards, Alexandra Mazzitelli

Comments:Roger M. Driskill akonzak@aol.com I thank you for the story re: Georgia Tech Leaves the SEC. How about the real story between the Bear and Wally Butts and the Saturday Evening Post? Much appreciated. Best wishes.

Thank you Mr. Driskell. Glad you enjoyed it! As for the Bryant-Butts story . . . Here it is for those who may not know the inside scoop on what you are talking about. Butts resigned as head coach after a disappointing six-and-four season in 1960. He remained UGA's athletic director, but his tenure was marred by scandal. In March 1963 the Saturday Evening Post published a story that accused Butts and Alabama head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant of fixing the 1962 Georgia-Alabama game, which the Crimson Tide won thirty-five to nothing. Butts and Bryant sued the Post for libel. In the ensuing trial Butts was awarded $3.06 million, at the time the largest amount ever awarded to a libel plaintiff. (The amount was later reduced to $460,000.) Though Butts won the trial, his reputation had been severely damaged, and he was forced to resign as athletic director. Butts's career record at UGA was 140-86-9, second only to Vince Dooley in total wins. Butts was elected to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1966; in 1997 he was elected posthumously to the College Football Hall of Fame. Wally Butts died on December 17, 1973 . . . Have a great day.
