In late February, the Bryan High School Panthers, Class B defending state champions stopped A. R. Johnson High of Augusta, Georgia, by a score of 73 to 69. It was the Panthers 19th victory without a defeat. The Panthers had lost only one game over the last three years. The Panthers averaged 75 points per game and were the most feared team in North East Georgia. Red Davenport scored 42 points in a 116 - 46 win over Watkinsville High. He averaged over 20 points per game. Another prominent team member was Aaron Shaney, who averaged around 18 points per game. Carroll Newton, Charles Colbert and C.D. Kidd completed their starting lineup. The Panthers were coached by Fred Mathis.
The Bryan High Lady Panthers won 10 of their last 15 regular season games. They were led by Margie Vernon who averaged 22 points per game. They were coached by Miss Lynda Glenn and Mr. Eldridge Jay.
