On June 7, 1962, the new Jefferson olympic sized swimming pool opened at Memorial Stadium.  Tremendous crowds were in attendance every day and evening.

On August 22,  Jefferson Mills and the Jackson Herald jointly sponsored the first ever AAU swimming and diving meet ever to be held in the city.  It was fully sanctioned by the Georgia Amateur Athletic Association.

Jefferson organized teams in all the various age groups and participated in the meet.
