JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHICAL ARCHIVES

Back to the 60s

In August the Inter-state 85 project moved close to completion.

The stretch from Commerce to the Gainesville-Winder  road was opened the week of the twenty-second.  This left only 17 miles to complete the project. It would make  a direct route from Atlanta to Greenville, South Carolina. The project  was  completed in November of 1965.

The World was coming closer together as these super-highways became more prominent throughout the United States.

When Jefferson students returned for the Fall opening, a new group of coaches were in place. . . . Coach Lofton was now Athletic Director and head football coach . . . Coach Keen was head track and cross country coach. He would later take the wrestling program to state prominence . . . Coach Farmer would coach the boys basketball team and baseball team . . . Coach Knight and Coach Stoudenmire remained on the coaching staff . . . Coach Knight would later become head boys basketball coach and produce a final four finish . . . Coach Stoudenmire would later replace Coach Lofton as head football coach and take the Dragons to their only TWO state runner-up finishes in their proud history . . . A record number of athletes participated in athletics in 1965 as a record number of sports activities were made available to them. The Golden age was gone at Jefferson High School! . . . A new era was underway that would become competitive in all sports as the years went by. The promise was great for Jefferon High School . . . All was go as the "old" days were left behind. It was an exciting time at Jefferson High school as the 1966 year started in September of 1965.
